Found today in Boing Boing! In 1906, a farmers J.W. and E.C. Fawkes formed the Aerial Trolley Company Co., Inc. and put a monorail-like trolley in their Burbank farm. Is this real-life steampunk? I believe so. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the utter coolness of even the company name, Aerial Trolley Company Co., Inc. It’s like something from a Jules Verne novel. Excellent information and photos USC Digital Library tell us that the Fawkes patented and built this aerial trolley as an experimental transport system that never quite materialized. It later was called “Fawkes’ Folly.” Aerial Trolley Drawings and Patent Fawkes patented the trolley, and these drawings give us some of the crispest views of how the trolley worked: Close-Ups First, the driver of the trolley: What I find fascination is the trolley’s propeller. It looks like the propeller is really made of wires, with only the leading edge solid: You can’t have an aerial trolley opening celebration without a band. And when you have a band, you’ve got to have a upright bass-player in the open-air cars: How does this trolley move?
No, this is not a typo; no repeated words. This article is partially about the disappearance of the Hawaii Clipper plane in 1938; partially about why almost no one has ever heard of this. The PanAm Clippers were flying boats–passenger planes–that flew from mainland U.S. to China. Because of the Clippers’ (and all boats at that time) limited range, the Clippers hopped from island base to island base, much like a toad hopping rocks: Hawaii, Midway, Wake, Guam, Philippines, Macao, and China mainland. On July 28, 1938, the Hawaii Clipper took off from Guam with six passengers and nine crew. Destination: Manila. The Clipper Vanishes At 12:11pm, the Clipper navigator reported to Manila that they were about 2 hours away. Everything was going smoothly, and weather was fine. At 12:12pm, Panay Island (just south of Manila) tried to contact the Clipper, but there was no response. Panay sent several other messages, but with the same result. No rescue team was sent out immediately because the Clippers knew these waters well, and were equipped for safety. After all, these were flying boats. At the worst, they could always put down on the water. As a Time magazine article of August 8, [...]

Video Script The Hindenburg‘s “A” deck was the place where most everything happened–eating, dining, sleeping, lounging, sightseeing. Dining Area As we walk up the stairs from the “B” Deck, we go towards the Dining Area. There were only a few tables in the Dining area, and meals were served in shifts, much on a train. But you’ll notice the generous spacing between the tables. And that’s something you find a lot on the Hindenburg: lots of open space. Promenade On the other side of a low wall was the promenade–for sitting or leaning against the rail to watch the Atlantic Ocean pass far below. Lounge Area On the other side of the “A” Deck–separated by the passenger cabins–was a similar space, but it had a different purpose. This was the Lounge area with another large open space and aluminum chairs and tables. The piano was largely aluminum and pigskin and weighed around 400 pounds. Reading/Writing Room For a little private time, there was a Reading/Writing room in back. Passengers could browse the small collection of books or write letters or postcards at the small writing desks. Passenger Cabins Finally, at night there were 25 passenger cabins with bunks that could [...]

One of the best, and cheapest, books that I have ever had about the Hindenburg is called Hindenburg: an Illustrated History, by Rick Archbold, with paintings by Ken Marschall. The art is too beautiful to even talk about in this space. But because one interest of Invisible Themepark is cutaways, let’s look at one cutaway of the “A” Deck of the Hindenburg. The Hindenburg’s Cabins On the “A” Deck were 25 passenger cabins that had two beds apiece, in bunk-like fashion. The walls between the cabins were fairly thin, just foam and a layer of fabric. The cabins could be quite noisy if you had a loud tenant in the adjoining room. Unlike the outer cabins in a cruise ship, none of these cabins in the Hindenburg had windows. The cabins were not a space where you spent a lot of time. Most time was spent in the more spacious public rooms. Public Spaces: Promenade, Dining, Lounge, and Reading Room On either side of the “A” Deck were promenades where passengers could sit or stand while looking out at the angled windows to the ground or clouds moving below. On one side was the large six-table dining room, hardly the [...]

Zeppelins, despite their mammoth size, are by nature secretive modes of transport. Even when they plied the skies on a regular basis, zeppelins were largely misunderstood by the general public. I think I will puke if I read another book with an overly simplistic wrap-up like this: And the the fiery destruction of the Hindenburg effectively marked the end of the airship age. The End. God bless my Time-Life Books Epic of Flight series book, The Giant Airships, but that’s pretty much the neat ‘n’ tidy way they wrap up this whole, complicated saga. Nothing is that neat. There were many factors that contributed to the demise of airship travel (or I should say lull, since it is starting to come back) in the late 1930s. One tiny factor, out of perhaps hundreds, is the fact that helium, the heavier but safer gas, came mainly from two sources: the U.S. and Russia. In other words, not in Germany. But I digress. That said, let’s look at one super-cool, secret part of the airships: the sub-cloud or spy basket. Sub-Cloud Facts As one crewman described the experience of being in a sub-cloud: There I hung, exactly as if I had been [...]

The always-transparent China has been building a submarine base near Sanya, on Hainan Island off its southern coast. This represents a further expansion of China’s presence in this South China Sea/Paracel Islands area–a build-up that has been going on for the last twenty years. What I find interesting is that FoxNews calls this a secret submarine base, even though it is clearly not secret. I know about it. You know about it. The world knows about it. It’s been known, in fact, since 2002. So, how secret is it? Jane’s, the venerable publisher of military periodicals and books, has a more sober take on the matter, simply calling it “a major underground nuclear submarine base.”

I am reading an excellent book called Iron Coffins, by Commander Herbert A. Werner, who served on five German u-boats between 1941 and 1945. Judging by this sailor’s uniform and the quality of the photo, I’d guess that this is WWI. But I liked it anyway and thought I should include it. In fact, there’s something “non-German” about the image that I cannot put my finger on, even though the site’s caption claims that it’s German. What didn’t I know about u-boats? Mostly everything. For any reader with even a scant knowledge of boats and subs, none of this will be news–but it was news to me. Here are some things I’ve picked up so far: By 1944-45, the u-boat losses skyrocketed. I’m not quite sure I believe the chart in Iron Coffins, but here goes anyway: 600-700 boats lost during that period. Can anyone verify? That sounds huge. U-boats and subs in general do most of their operations top-side. They only go under when they absolutely need to be hidden. Amount of diesel fuel was sufficient to take them far into the North Atlantic and return, though fuel stops did sometimes happen. The goal was to rack up tonnage, [...]
